Client: Cities of Winthrop & Twisp & Okanogan County

Project Size: .52 Acres

The communities of Winthrop and Twisp enjoy a vibrant natural, cultural, and rural heritage. These combined resources create a unique sense of place. A multi-use trail system connecting the communities through Okanogan County would provide an invaluable resource for citizens and visitors alike.

R. W. Thorpe & Associates, Inc. was excited to assist these two communities in building a framework for future trail design. Initially, extensive work by local leaders, planners, and volunteers was compiled and redirected into a version highlighting the importance, function, and economic benefit of the trail system.

Extensive site visits and a two-day design charette were key in compiling site information and obtaining public input and support. In conjunction with the local efforts, a report was produced by RWT/A making the project goals more clear, concise and logical to the community.

Connecting the towns of Twisp and Winthrop by multi-use trail along the scenic Chewuck and Methow rivers was a large undertaking. As such, RWT/A offered detailed solutions to property acquisition, funding, project division, and suggestions for preservation of sensitive environmental issues along riparian zones.

Key considerations of the plan included:
